Worldcoin has undergone a rebranding to World, alongside the introduction of its Ethereum Layer-2 network, World Chain, and the announcement of several major updates.
During a keynote on October 17, Sam Altman, the founder of Worldcoin, revealed the rebranding, which includes improvements to its iris-scanning Orb devices. The company has already updated its branding across its social media and website.
The new Orb devices are being upgraded with Nvidia hardware, making them up to five times more powerful than their previous versions, while reducing their carbon footprint and minimizing the number of required parts.
These enhanced Orbs will soon be available in self-service kiosks, initially in select markets, helping to speed up the global roll-out of proof of human verifications.
World is also broadening its identity verification methods. Users will now be able to confirm their identity through other channels, such as a program called World ID Credentials, which lets them use NFC-enabled government-issued passports for verification, offering greater flexibility.
Additionally, World introduced World App 3.0, featuring new updates, including the World ID Deep Face tool. This feature aims to detect and block deepfakes, providing enhanced security for video content to safeguard against AI-generated media.
In line with these updates, World announced integrations with popular apps like WhatsApp, FaceTime, and Zoom, simplifying the process for users to verify their identity and access World’s services directly within the platforms they already use.
World Chain mainnet launch
The Ethereum Layer-2 network, World Chain, which was first announced in April, officially went live following the keynote event. World Chain is designed to improve efficiency and add new functionality for users by integrating World ID, World App, and the Worldcoin cryptocurrency (WLD).
The network will prioritize onboarding verified human users over bots, offering them access to block space and a free gas allowance to encourage participation.
Already, World Chain is hosting major projects from the industry, including Uniswap, Optimism, Alchemy, and Dune, among others.
WLD price tanks
Despite recent positive developments, the price of WLD did not respond strongly to the latest announcements, dropping 1.4% to $2.20 at the time of writing. However, the token has seen a 28.4% increase over the past week and a 47% rise over the past month.
