Karate Combat is making an exciting move into the web3 space by launching its layer-2 blockchain network, UP, on the Hedera platform in the first quarter of 2025. This new initiative aims to enhance the experience for sports leagues and various gaming platforms by providing a customizable software stack that facilitates their transition to web3.
The UP layer-2 network will support Karate Combat’s existing “Up Only Gaming” model, where players can earn tokens by predicting fight outcomes. With over 100,000 active players already engaged, the platform is looking to further expand its user base and incentivize early adopters.
The launch will include a native UP token, with a significant portion reserved for KARATE stakers and an incentive program aimed at integrating with Hedera’s HBAR ecosystem. The partnership with the HBAR Foundation solidifies Karate Combat’s position as a pioneer in utilizing blockchain technology within the sports and gaming industries.
This move could attract even more attention to web3 applications in sports, especially as the integration of blockchain continues to evolve.
“We’re now in the last half of our third year partnering with Karate Combat, and it’s been incredible to see what they’ve accomplished. As the first professional sports league governed by a token, they’ve set the bar high and pushed the boundaries of what’s possible onchain.”
David Cramer, chief operating officer, The HBAR Foundation.
