The Road to Pi Network’s Open Mainnet: Will 2025 Be the Year?

Recent updates from the Pi Core Team and the slow pace of user migrations have left the timeline for this significant event open to speculation.

Is Pi Network Prepared for Open Mainnet?

In June 2024, the Pi development team emphasized that the mainnet node software would be critical for transitioning to Open Mainnet. However, three months later, there are concerns about whether adequate progress has been made. The migration process has slowed, with only 400,000 new migrations completed in the past 75 days, increasing the total from 5.8 million to 6.2 million. This figure falls short of the initial expectation of reaching around 10 million.

Despite the slow migration, the Pi Developers appear to be taking a cautious approach, focusing on ensuring the mainnet node software is thoroughly tested and ready. Given their careful strategy, it seems unlikely they will hasten development in the current environment.

The Missing Piece: Whitepaper Expansion

A significant point of contention within the Pi Network community is governance. Many believe that Chapter 3 of the whitepaper is being developed, which is expected to cover critical topics like governance, supply, and decentralization. Without well-defined strategies for these areas, the launch of Open Mainnet remains uncertain.

The expansion of the whitepaper is anticipated to offer crucial insights into how the Pi Network will function once Open Mainnet is launched. It is expected to clearly outline the governance model, including voting mechanisms, node operations, and token supply management, providing much-needed transparency for the community.
