The Pi Network community has long anticipated the arrival of Open Mainnet. The Open Mainnet is touted to be the project’s vision of creating a fully decentralized, user-powered cryptocurrency. As we approach the end of Q3 2024, many wonder: Will 2025 finally be the year Pi reaches its Open Mainnet milestone?

With the recent announcements from the Pi Core Team and slow progress in migrations, the timeline for this highly anticipated event remains a topic of intense debate.

Is Pi Network Ready for Open Mainnet?

In June 2024, the core team of Pi developers made clear that the mainnet node software would be crucial for transitioning to Open Mainnet. However, three months later, many in the community are wondering whether enough progress has been made. Migrations have slowed considerably, with only 400,000 new migrations taking place in the last 75 days, bringing the total from 5.8M to 6.2 M. Many initially predicted this number to be around 10M.

Despite the slow migration rate, the Pi Developers have not rushed. Their focus seems to be on completing the necessary groundwork, including the proper testing of the mainnet node software, which is expected to be the foundation for Open Mainnet. Given their methodical approach, it is unlikely they will accelerate development under the current circumstances.

The Missing Piece: Whitepaper Expansion

One of the major unresolved issues that continues to stir debate within the Pi Network community is governance. Many expect that Chapter 3 of the whitepaper is currently in the works. When completed, it will address essential topics such as Governance, Supply, and Decentralization. Without clear strategies in place for these key areas, Open Mainnet cannot proceed.

The expansion of the whitepaper will provide much-needed clarity on how the network will operate after Pi Network’s Open Mainnet launches. It is expected that the governance model, including voting mechanisms, node operations, and token supply management, will be laid out clearly for the community.

While there are several hurdles still to overcome, there is a growing sense of optimism that Pi Network’s Open Mainnet could realistically happen in 2025. With Pi Day (March 14th) being a symbolic date, it wouldn’t be surprising to see an announcement by December 2024, laying the groundwork for a potential Pi Day launch.
