The Indonesian National Post Office has unveiled the country’s first Non-Fungible Token (NFT) postage stamp featuring the Cenderawasih, or bird of paradise.
On September 27, Indonesia’s National Post Office, Pos Indonesia, launched this NFT stamp in celebration of the 79th anniversary of the Indonesian Post in Bandung, in collaboration with the Indonesian Ministry of Communications and Information.
This initiative marks Indonesia’s debut in producing a stamp that leverages blockchain technology, appealing to philately enthusiasts worldwide for their digital collections.
Valued at approximately $9.90, the stamp showcases the Cenderawasih bird, known for its vibrant, multi-colored feathers and native to Papua, Indonesia.
According to the official Indonesia Post account, the NFT stamps will be issued in a limited quantity as part of a booklet.
Faizal Rochmad Djoemadi, Director of Pos Indonesia, stated that the NFT stamp is intended as a collector’s item rather than a functional postage stamp for mailing letters or packages. He hopes this initiative will spark interest among younger generations in stamp collecting.
“Hopefully, young people who are digital natives will return to collecting stamps, but in the form of NFTs,” Faizal remarked during the launch event.
He noted that a physical version of the stamp will also be available, allowing collectors to own both the physical and digital copies. Buyers can purchase the stamp through the Indonesian Post website by scanning a QR code that directs them to a Google form for ordering.
With this launch, Indonesia joins Thailand and Malaysia as the third country in Southeast Asia to offer NFT stamps.
