CZ Considers Allowing the Crypto Community to Turn His Dog into a Meme Coin

Changpeng ‘CZ’ Zhao, former CEO of Binance, is considering the possibility of turning his dog into a meme coin after a playful suggestion from the crypto community. On February 13, CZ engaged with a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter) where crypto traders asked for the name and picture of his pet dog. CZ revealed that his dog is a Belgian Malinois and jokingly pondered how the meme coin creation process works, asking how people can identify which meme coin is official.

After receiving several explanations from followers, CZ shared that he found the idea interesting and would “mull it over for a day or so,” as he typically takes time with big decisions. He humorously added that he would consider his dog’s “privacy” before deciding whether the meme coin traders might “dox the dog for the cause.”

CZ also mentioned that he had decided to interact with some of the meme coins launched on the BNB Chain, which could hint at a growing openness to the meme coin space, despite his earlier reservations.

In the past, the crypto community has launched meme coins based on the pets of influential figures in the industry. One example is the meme coin created from late cryptographer Len Sassaman’s cats, Sasha and Odin, as part of the speculation around Sassaman’s potential connection to Bitcoin creator Satoshi Nakamoto. Another well-known meme coin, FLOKI, was inspired by a post from Elon Musk, where he shared a picture of a Shiba Inu and named it “Floki.”

This shift in attitude from CZ is particularly interesting given that, in November 2024, he had criticized meme coins, referring to them as “a little weird” and emphasizing that the crypto community should focus on developing “real applications” for blockchain. He clarified that his comments at the time were specifically about the controversial livestreams on meme coin launchpad pump.fun, which had faced criticism for violating safety guidelines.

Meme coins have become a major force in the crypto space, with their market cap reaching nearly $78 billion, representing a 2.7% increase. With even figures like the President of the United States entering the meme coin game, it’s clear that meme coins have firmly embedded themselves in crypto culture. Whether CZ will go through with the idea of turning his dog into a meme coin remains to be seen, but his recent musings have certainly captured the community’s attention.
