Cannes is taking significant steps toward becoming a “crypto-friendly” city, as Mayor David Lisnard has announced plans to support cryptocurrency payments for local businesses. This initiative comes ahead of the Ethereum Community Conference (EthCC), which the city will host later this year, and is part of Cannes’ broader Web3 strategy.
To prepare for the 8th edition of EthCC, scheduled to take place from June 30 to July 3, 2025, the local government will organize training sessions for merchants to help them integrate crypto payment systems. The first training session will be held on February 4, 2025, at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès, where business owners will learn about the technical, legal, accounting, and tax implications of adopting cryptocurrency payments.
A “crypto-friendly” merchant map will also be developed, showcasing businesses in Cannes that accept digital currencies. This map will serve as a guide for EthCC attendees and tourists, allowing them to easily locate crypto-accepting establishments around the city.
EthCC, Europe’s largest Ethereum event, is expected to attract over 6,500 registered participants and a total attendance of more than 10,000. Lisnard sees this crypto initiative as an opportunity for local businesses to engage with a global, tech-savvy audience while also boosting Cannes’ reputation as a prime destination for international events.
There has been some speculation that Lisnard’s pro-crypto stance could be part of a broader political strategy, especially as he gears up for the 2027 French presidential election. However, his primary objective remains supporting local commerce and tourism. This move is in line with the increasing global interest in blockchain technology and digital assets, positioning Cannes as a forward-thinking city in the digital economy.
