Japan’s Metaplanet Adds 135 Bitcoin to Treasury, Reaches 2,235 BTC

Metaplanet, one of Japan’s most active corporate Bitcoin investors, has further strengthened its position by adding 135 Bitcoin to its treasury, bringing its total holdings to 2,235 BTC. The purchase, valued at 1.939 billion yen ($12.8 million), was announced on February 25, with an average purchase price of 12.44 million yen ($82,000) per Bitcoin.

Metaplanet has been steadily increasing its Bitcoin holdings since the launch of its Bitcoin Treasury Operations, following a similar strategy to that of MicroStrategy, the company with the largest corporate Bitcoin treasury. As of now, Metaplanet’s growing holdings signify its continued commitment to Bitcoin as a long-term asset.

The company’s Bitcoin Yield, which tracks the amount of Bitcoin held per share, saw impressive growth of 309.8% in Q4 2024. However, this growth has slowed to 23.2% in early 2025, primarily due to an increase in the number of Metaplanet’s shares.

To finance its Bitcoin acquisitions, Metaplanet continues to utilize capital market activities. In January 2025, the company issued 21 million stock acquisition rights to EVO FUND, managed by Evolution Capital Management. Additionally, it redeemed early bonds totaling 4 billion yen ($26.5 million) in February 2025.

Since starting Bitcoin purchases in April 2024, Metaplanet has seen a remarkable surge in its stock price, rising more than 3000%. This makes Metaplanet the best-performing stock in Japan. On February 18, the company announced a 10-to-1 stock split, set to take effect on April 1, 2025. The decision follows a reverse stock split in August 2024, where ten shares were consolidated into one. The upcoming stock split is intended to increase liquidity and attract new investors, as the company’s stock price has now exceeded 6000 yen per share.

Metaplanet’s strategy could serve as a model for other businesses looking to integrate Bitcoin into their balance sheets, especially considering Japan’s progressive stance toward cryptocurrency adoption.
